Freedom of Information Act requests to the State's Attorney's Office

Pursuant to the fundamental philosophy of the American constitutional form of government, it is declared to be the public policy of the State of Illinois that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts and policies of those who represent them as public officials and public employees consistent with the terms of this Act. Such access is necessary to enable the people to fulfill their duties of discussing public issues fully and freely, making informed political judgments and monitoring government to ensure that it is being conducted in the public interest. - Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140/1.

Disclosures pursuant to 5 ILCS 140/4

Purpose: The State's Attorney is elected by the residents of Champaign County for a term of 4 years. The State's Attorney prosecutes Illinois state law criminal violations that occur in Champaign County. The State's Attorney also serves as legal advisor to Champaign County officials and agencies including the County Board, and represents and advises Champaign County in civil litigation.

Office and staff: The State's Attorney's Office is located at 101 E. Main Street, Urbana, Illinois. The Office employs 44 full time staff and 2 part time staff.

Budget: The State's Attorney's Office operating budget for FY2018 is $2,293,196.00

Boards: There are no boards, commissions, committees or councils that operate in an advisory capacity relative to the operation of the SAO or that exercise control over its policies and procedures or to which it is required to report and be answerable for its operations.

Making a FOIA Request

Members of the public may make requests for inspection or for copies of the office's public records under FOIA, 5 ILCS 140/1 et seq. The Act provides that some records are exempt from inspection and copying.

FOIA requests should be made in writing and should specifically state which public records are being requested. The request should include the requester's full name, address, telephone number and e-mail to facilitate communication and provision of the requested records. For the convenience of requestors we provide a suggested form.
